Medical Operations
NBC Olympics Medical: 2001-2016
Role: Medical Operations Leader 2001-2015; Embedded Consultant 2015-2016
Opportunity
For eight Olympic Games from 2001 to 2016, I oversaw end-to-end medical operations for NBC Olympics, the US rights-holding broadcaster. The role required building a comprehensive medical support infrastructure in each host country—navigating healthcare systems, regulatory environments, international medical staffing, and the operational demands of a 3,000+ global workforce deployed across venues, hotels, media villages, and the International Broadcast Center (IBC).
For each Games, the operational fundamentals remained the same; however, local healthcare infrastructure and medical systems varied dramatically from country to country.
Approach
Partnering with NBC's Chief Medical Officer and clinical team, I served as medical operations leader across every event phase:
Research and Partner Development
Investigated host country medical systems including emergency services, insurance requirements, patient protocols, and medication restrictions
Conducted site visits to hospitals, private clinics, dental providers, and pharmacies to assess service levels, equipment, and pricing
Met with host country medical teams to review broadcaster permissions, venue support services, and public health reporting requirements
Strategic Planning and Finance
Aligned medical planning with production, transportation, accommodations, and staffing schedules
Created and maintained the medical budget and negotiated contracts for local staffing and consulting physicians
Developed medical protocol documentation for all operational locations
Oversaw the setup of a temporary clinic and the ordering of supplies
Onboarding, Staffing, and Security
Developed content for hiring packages including disclosure forms and recommended personal travel kit contents
Partnered with NBC Security to align medical operations with emergency response procedures and developed the medical security plan
Participated in tabletop emergency planning sessions
Games-Time Operations
Oversaw receipt, inventory, and management of medications and clinical equipment upon arrival
Trained incoming medical staff on Olympic operations
Coordinated with venue broadcast managers on medical issues and served as HR liaison for workforce medical matters
Oversaw relationship with global assistance company and managed cross-border insurance issues
Results and Impact
Behind every successful NBC Olympics production was a workforce that needed to stay healthy, safe, and supported. Providing that assurance meant building a fully compliant clinical infrastructure in a new country every two years. As part of the NBC Medical team, we navigated diverse global healthcare systems to ensure NBC Olympics workers had access to quality medical care. Rigorous planning, exceptional teamwork, and strong local partnerships made that possible, resulting in a scalable framework adaptable to each host country's regulatory and healthcare environment. We supported more than 3,000 NBC workers, clients, and VIPs while ensuring compliance locally and developing standardized processes that improved consistency across future Olympic Games.
“I have had the opportunity to work closely with Robin on several complex international medical projects and can attest to her exceptional operational capability and leadership. From a physician’s perspective, Robin’s ability to translate clinical requirements into structured, reliable systems is outstanding. From a physician executive’s perspective, there is nothing like having Robin’s competence in a dyad partnership to tackle the most dizzying problems.
Across large-scale, high-profile environments, diverse healthcare systems, and stringent regulatory constraints, Robin has led the development of comprehensive medical operations from the ground up. Her work encompassed strategic planning, global coordination, and the execution of a fully compliant clinical infrastructure, ensuring that care delivery was seamless, safe, and responsive in highly variable and unfamiliar conditions.
What distinguishes Robin is her ability to bring clarity and discipline to complex, high-stakes operational challenges. She designs processes that are thought-out, resilient, and scalable, enabling clinical teams to focus on patient care. Robin combines intuition and insight with a highly collaborative approach, fostering trust across teams, cultures, and areas of expertise. Organizations seeking expertise in non-standard, mission-critical operations will find her capabilities rare and extremely valuable.
Having worked alongside Robin for many years, I can say that she is an expert whose professionalism is matched by genuine integrity. Her commitment to her clients will make her an operational partner for the long term.”
“It has been a wonderful pleasure working with Robin. Olympic Games medical operations are very complicated and involve many moving parts - Robin is the glue that holds it all together.”
